Ethical and Legal Issues

The widespread use of technology in education brings challenge to the teaching profession. Although the use of internet, laptops, tablets and ipads bring many benefits for our students, they also bring challenges and risks for students and schools (Ministry of Education, 2015). The overall objective for schools is to provide safe and responsible use of digital technology.

In New Zealand, the Ministry of education has issued a  guide for schools to support schools in the management of safe and responsible use of  digital technology for learning.
I had difficulty thinking of a dilemma  that I was ever involved in for the following reasons:
At my school when a child enrols, we get the parents to sign a digital technology consent form explaining that their child' s work, pictures or video may be used for publishing , school facebook or to share with others. My school has blocked many unsafe sites and teachers and students have limited control to websites. Sometimes I get frustrated as my students can't access to certain educational apps.

In my junior school we use internet for searching information, to watch educational you-tube clips, and ipads for recording students ideas and for educational games. My students do not have gmail accounts or facebook so they are not able to connect to people in the community.

There was one small situation that I came across last year when I was doing my mindlab assignment.
I am going to use Halls model to reflect my situation.
The problem : A parent did not sign the consent form for me to use her child's work or picture for my assignment.

Who were the main stakeholders with interests in the problem, and what were their interests. The stakeholders were me, the student and her parents.

Action that I took: It was tricky for me to video or take pictures of students while they were working collaboratively as she was part of that group that I was using for my assignment. So I had to maneuver around the group making sure I do not take any pictures of her.  As a teacher it was my duty to be loyal to the parents and respect them and I did.

As teachers we are committed to respect our students and their families and whanau so they can trust us with the safety of their children (Education Council, 2017).
